Sleepy, tradition-bound Riverford, Texas is startled when a Czech immigrant sharecropper’s daughter, Sarah Novak, announces she wants to be a teacher rather than marry. Granted it is 1895, and a new century is fast approaching, but nothing has changed in Riverford since the end of The War 30 years ago. Then ...

.... Mrs. Victoria Hodges steps off the train at the Riverford station and change arrives in a big way! She’s a native Texan who ran off to Europe 20 years ago to become an artist. How she managed to hook wealthy local businessman, Hayden Hodges, is a mystery to the town, but one thing is certain — she's here to stir up things. Why, she wears Paris fashions, speaks French, wants to build a public library, and supports equal rights for women — including rights to education!

With this newcomer's help and support, nothing but hard work stands between Sarah and a teaching certificate. Nothing , that is, except Robert Lee Logan, a handsome young banker from Fort Worth with eyes for Sarah.

Skirting Tradition Kay Moser 9781946016034 Books

“Skirting Tradition” is the story of four brave women who refuse to be controlled by the prejudicial traditions of late 19th century America. Sarah is a Czech immigrant who wants to be a teacher, not a sharecropper’s wife. Jana is Sarah’s mother. She insists, “My daughter is gonna have more,” and she defies the immigrant community, her husband, and her own poverty to give Sarah her chance. Victoria is a talented artist who had to flee her family and culture in her youth and dare to go to Europe alone to study art. Christine is a pianist whose genius has been denied, first by the Civil War and later by her duties as wife and mother.

These women have decided it’s time for things to change, and they will not take “no” for an answer.

The author, Dr. Kay Moser, has obviously decided it’s time for things to change in the world of faith-friendly fiction. Rather than a predictable, too-sweet-to-believe story, she has given us a beautiful, heart-warming, truthful book about the human condition, the courage of the human spirit, and the constant presence of God in our lives. Dr. Moser is a true word-master, crafting beautiful, elevated prose filled with literary, artistic and musical allusions. And she does this without a single word of profanity or vulgarity. Brava, Dr. Moser! Please keep writing.

Skirting Tradition by Author Kay Moser

Skirting Tradition is my first exposure to Author Kay Moser and I very much enjoyed this novel set in the late 1800's. Sarah Novak is definitely ahead of the times. The sixteen year old daughter of Czechoslovakian immigrants, Sarah does not want to follow in the steps of her mother and father. Unlike her brothers, she is not encouraged to get an education as according to her Pa, it would be a complete waste of time as she is only a farm girl and must accept her lot in life. Determined to marry her off to a local farm man, Sarah along with her mother and against her father's wishes, decide that she can fulfill her dream and God's plan for her. She is keen on becoming a teacher and with the help of newly married Mrs. Victoria Hodges who has recently returned to Riverford, Texas from Europe, the stage is set.

There is a varied cast of characters and plenty of twists and turns which add to the reading pleasure. Robert Lee Logan is smitten with Sarah so there is much to unfold in the next book in this series.

Up The Down Ladder Simple Ideas to Overcome Depression
Sarah Novak’s story is a familiar one a young person faced first with the dilemma of either meeting parental expectations or fulfilling her God-given calling and then discovering that the world beyond her family also opposes her. Although her story is all too common, even today, Sarah Novak is an engaging character, strong yet respectful of her family, determined to be a dutiful daughter while working diligently to achieve her goal of becoming a teacher. Skillfully told by Dr. Kay Moser, Sarah’s story reveals obstacles—internal, familial, societal—that threaten to overwhelm her dreams.
When her father reluctantly agrees to allow her, a “farm girl,” to work in town because he needs the money she’ll earn, Sarah first meets a woman working for the same small-town, self-appointed elite, a woman defined by her social class and ethnicity. Sarah soon finds the same rigid social structure instilled in others, even those of the working class, in the person of a salesclerk who insists she buy serviceable black muslin as a gift for her mother rather than a more beautiful fabric deemed appropriate only for those of a higher social standing. A Christmas reception planned by Sarah’s supporters, those who have the potential to change the societal hindrances blocking Sarah’s achievement of her dream, proves that chipping away at the wall of prejudice and hierarchy may be more difficult than any of them anticipated. The centerpiece tree, decked in symbols of progress and the outside world, further divides the small closed community. Sarah finally encounters institutionalized, legalized discrimination that stands between her and her dreams.
Skirting Tradition is an immensely readable novel, a realistic portrait of near turn-of-the-century America. The story traces an individual’s journey, but the reader easily recognizes that, while specific instances differ from person to person, Sarah represents so many, some who overcame the objections of their family, their community, outdated laws, even the doubts in their own hearts to achieve their dreams. And some who were unable to do so.
